Processors

The SMP 16/CP and SMP 16/SG can be ordered with the optional 1.4 GHz Pentium processor, increasing the SMP Gateway’s processing capability tenfold. The faster processor option is recommended for high-capacity applications, where the Annunciator or automation options are used, or a large number of devices are connected.

SMP 16 GPS Clock Option

The SMP Gateway GPS clock installs directly on Cooper Power Systems' SMP 16/CP and SMP 16/SG gateways to provide a highly accurate internal time source. This factory-installed option provides a cost-effective solution to maintain substation devices in accurate synchronization, as recommended by NERC.

Redundant Architectures

The SMP Gateway offers multiple redundancy scenarios to ensure the highest availability:

• SMP 16 Gateway redundancy—Standby gateway automatically replaces active gateway in case of failure
• Control center connection redundancy—Send data simultaneously to two control centers, using separate communication channels
• Device connection redundancy—Use two different links to poll device
• Device redundancy—Combine two physical devices as one logical device

Automation Functions

Since it is connected between the substation devices and the control centers, the SMP Gateway is well positioned to implement advanced processing functions that would be impossible to perform in less sophisticated devices. The SMP Gateway provides the following automation capabilities:

• The Automation Functions module adds basic automation capabilities to the SMP Gateway—perform logic operations, select the best-of two inputs, set an output in a device according to the value of an input, inhibit a group of points, latch or debounce inputs, and more
• The Soft PLC module and CoDeSys workbench provide a complete development environment for automation scripts using IEC 61131-3 languages. With the Soft PLC module, there is no need to add external PLCs to implement automation scripts, such as reclosers and load balancing

SMP Gateway Annunciator

The SMP Gateway Annunciator is a software option that provides immediate access to all substation data. Simply connect a standard touch screen display to the built-in video connector. No additional hardware is required.

The SMP Gateway Annunciator provides a local display perfectly adapted to your substation architecture:

• Visual and audio alarms
• Real-time data point values and statuses
• Real-time performance and communication statistics
• Alarm and event history

Passthrough Function

The Passthrough function provides direct access to any device connected to the SMP Gateway, for maintenance and engineering purposes. Connecting through the SMP Gateway provides an encrypted communications channel and ensures that only authorized personnel can modify device settings.

If the device supports it, the Passthrough function can even be used in interleaved mode, to connect to the device without interrupting SCADA data retrieval.
